About Us

The Association of Electrical Contractors (Ireland) (AECI) is the leading representative trade association for the Irish electrical industry. Dedicated to supporting electrical contractors across commercial, industrial, and domestic sectors, AECI provides a comprehensive range of technical and business support services. These services are continually evolving to meet the dynamic needs of the industry, with a particular focus on enhancing the standards of electrical work and equipping members to thrive in today’s competitive economic environment.

AECI actively fosters professional development and industry engagement through events such as its annual trade show and seminars. These gatherings offer members opportunities to explore the latest innovations, participate in educational sessions, and network with peers and industry leaders. Topics covered range from new wiring regulations and safety standards to advancements in energy-efficient technologies and new energy landscapes.

HISTORY

The Association of Electrical Contractors (Ireland) was established in 1960 representing Electrical Contractors who, as a group, are consistently the largest employers in the Electrical Contracting Industry

The Association of Electrical Contractors Ireland has a proud and longstanding history of representing the interests of electrical contractors across Ireland. Established in 1960, the organisation was formed to provide a unified voice for independent electrical contractors and to promote professionalism, safety, and high standards within the industry.

From its early days, AECI has played a pivotal role in shaping the electrical contracting sector by advocating for fair regulations, offering technical guidance, and fostering collaboration among industry professionals. Over the decades, it has grown to become a key authority in the Irish electrical landscape, supporting members through a wide range of services including training, legal advice, and updates on industry standards and regulations.

President of AECI

President of the Association of Electrical Contractors of Ireland

Darren Kinsella was officially appointed as the new President of AECI at our AGM in march 2025.  Darren, who currently serves as energy transformation leader and business development manager – new energy landscapes at Schneider Electric, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role. With over 20 years’ experience spanning electrical contracting, energy management, automation, and sustainable energy strategies, Darren is ideally positioned to guide AECI into its next chapter of growth and innovation. Beyond his business achievements, Darren has dedicated significant time to industry development. Having served on the AECI Executive Council for seven years, he is a founding member of the electric vehicle charging alliance of ireland (EVCAI), and actively contributes to national initiatives through his work with the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI).  In addition, he sits on the board of Smart Grid Ireland, supporting sustainable energy distribution solutions. With a strong focus on continuous learning and staying ahead of industry trends and technologies, Darren’s leadership promises to be both dynamic and future-focused. His commitment to innovation and sustainability aligns closely with the AECI’s mission to enhance the standards of electrical work across Ireland and to provide valuable technical and business support services to its Members. Darren took over from outgoing president Gerry Geoghegan, contracts director at H. Shiels, who had given outstanding service over the past three years. Gerry remained a popular figure within the organisation and continued his involvement as a member of the AECI Executive Council. Speaking at the AECI AGM, Darren expressed his enthusiasm for the road ahead:

“I am honoured to take on this role at such an exciting time for the electrical industry. The challenges of energy transition, sustainability, and technological innovation present huge opportunities for our members. I look forward to working with the executive council and the wider AECI membership to continue raising standards, supporting business development, and ensuring we are well-equipped for the future.”

Gerry joined H Shiels in 1987. He became Contracts Director of the company in 2005. He has been a member of the AECI executive for over 10 years and so brings great experience to this new position.

Taking over from Colm Walsh, who had given over 3 years to the role. Gerry said “I would like to thank Colm for all his work, commitment & support and for steering the organisation through the rocky waters of the pandemic. Despite COVID restrictions Colm managed a very full agenda. I am delighted that Colm will still be very much involved in the council as well as on the technical committees.”

As an approved distributor, AECI proudly promotes the sale of the official NSAI National Rules for Electrical Installations – I.S. 10101:2020+A1:2024

These standards are essential for ensuring safety, compliance, and best practice within the electrical contracting industry in Ireland.

Whether you’re a registered contractor, inspector, educator or electrical apprentice, having access to the most up-to-date regulations is vital.
